Landsman Wilson Brown, 1864-

Aboard flagship Hartford during the Battle of Mobile Bay on 5 August 1864, he was knocked unconscious into the hold of the ship when an enemy shell burst fatally wounded a man on a ladder above him.  Upon regaining consciousness, Brown promptly returned to the passing of shells on the berth deck to the guns, although four of the six men at this station were either killed or wounded by enemy fire.  He was one of the first African Americans awarded the Medal of Honor by the U.S. Navy.
