When it was determined
during the attack at Pearl Harbor that the Nevada would get underway, he
disregarded his safety during the strafing and bombing to go to the quay and
cast off all lines. He swam back to his ship. Later while on the forecastle,
when it was ordered to anchor or ground the ship, he was on the exposed
forecastle attempting to let go the anchors when Japanese bombs blew him
overboard and took his life. Awarded the Medal of Honor. |
