Contraband Robert Blake, 1864-

An escaped slave and the first black sailor Medal of Honor winner, was serving aboard gunboat Marblehead off Legareville, Stono River on 25 December 1863.  During an engagement with the enemy at John’s Island, Blake serviced the forward rifle-gun, resulting in the enemy’s abandonment of position, leaving a caisson and gun behind.
