While aboard Fletcher
engaging Japanese forces off Corregidor Island on 14 February 1945, an enemy
projectile penetrated No. 1 gun powder magazine, setting a raging fire. Without
time to don breathing apparatus, he took two fire extinguishers into the acrid
smoke and he succeeded in stopping the fire and saving the ship. He succumbed
to his injuries. Awarded the Medal of Honor.
